A Translator’s Guide for General Nonprofits

If you work in a community charity, an environmental advocacy group, a food bank, a cultural institution, or a healthcare foundation, you might look at a book set in “Higher Education Advancement” and think, “This is too big for my shop.”

While Whitfield College has a dedicated database administrator, a prospect researcher, and a major gifts officer, the math and the human friction of database management are identical. When you read this book, use this simple mental translation key:

Advancement	Development, Fundraising, or Supporter Relations.
VP of Advancement (Maya)	Development Director, Chief Development Officer, or the Executive Director (ED).
Database Administrator (Priya)	The CRM Manager, Salesforce Admin, or whoever wears the “database hat” in your office.
Major Gift Officer (Reggie)	The Development Director, Relationship Manager, or Board Member holding donor relationships.
Dean Harlan	Your Program Director, Chief Program Officer, or the program staff member waiting on a restricted grant.
President Lawson / Provost	The Executive Director, Founder, or Board President.
Alumni / Class of ’78	Your members, regular donors, volunteers, and event attendees.
The Science Building Campaign	Your capital campaign, programmatic grant, or designated project fund.
Controller (Gene)	Your bookkeeper, Finance Director, or external CPA.
